Falkland Islands Penguin 2018 50p Cupro Nickel Coin Set
The king penguin is the 2nd biggest penguin type in the world with a general population approximated at 1.2 million. It is believed that the Falklands king penguin population growth might be due to overcrowding to the south at South Georgia. The coin includes a head shot of a King penguin displayed in marvelous colour which truly highlights the broad cheek spot contrasting with surrounding dark plumes and yellow-orange colour at the top of the chest that they are recognised by.
Found in the Sub Antarctic to the Antarctic peninsula, the Macaroni is one of the six species of crested penguins. The Macaroni Penguin has the largest population of all penguins, but in the Falklands occur in very small numbers and best amongst Rockhopper colonies in the Islands. Like all penguins it is flightless, with a streamlined body and wings stiffened and flattened into flippers for a marine lifestyle.
The Gentoo is the most common penguin on the Falkland Islands which are the home of the biggest population of this type of penguin in the world. Gentoo penguins are a long-tailed types of penguins first discovered by science in 1781 on the Falkland Islands by biologist Johann Reinhold Forster who travelled the world with Captain James Cook.
The Magellanic penguin is a summer resident of the Falkland Islands returning to breed. They start arriving in early September and return to the same burrow they left the year before. The adults have conspicuous black and white bands on their heads, neck and breast. The breed is medium-sized and is differentiated by their black backs and white abdomens. They also feature two black bands across their chests with the lower band shaped like an upside-down horseshoe.
The smallest and most agile penguin in the Falkland Islands, the Southern Rockhopper is easily recognisable with its straight thin yellow eyebrows with yellow plumes hanging above and behind the eyes.Unlike other breeds of penguin who get around obstacles by sliding or awkward climbing, rockhoppers will try and jump over boulders and across cracks. The breed is classified as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature with the population declining by a third in the last three decades.
The obverse of the coins include the special Pobjoy Mint effigy of Her majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
