HISTORY AND GUIDE TO THE COPPER CASH COINAGE OF JAPAN
This is a privately published work by me so nobody else has it for sale! This reference book is 8.5x11 inches, illustrated card covers, 154 numbered pages, copyright 2007, frontispiece penned by Ogawa Hiroshi. It begins with a newly edited, revised, and annotated version of the Polder's Abridged History of the Copper Coins of Japan with the original plates. Do not confuse this revised Polder with 1980s Xerox copy made by Bruce Smith. This new work is a totally overhauled edition.
Following it is a nine page paper called the
Enigma Surrounding the Medieval Coinage of the Ryukyu Islands
in which the writer disproves the notion that the so-called Ryuyku cash coins of the 15th century could have been made in Okinawa or the Ryukyu. This paper is followed by an
Attribution Guide to the Cash Coinage of Japan
with identifying features describing 356 types and varieties from the Nara-Heian Period through the Meiji restoration. Listings include: 62 types and varieties of the 12 Antique Sens (708-958 AD), 4 types of Shima Sen, 42 Bita Sen, 12 purported coinage of the 15th century Ryukyu, 2 each of Keicho and Genna Tsuho, 44 Ko-Kanei Tsuho (old type), 28 Genho Tsuho and other Nagasaki related coinage, 122 of Shin-Kanei Tsuho (new type post 1668 AD), 22 Tenpo Tsuho, 2 Hoei Tsuho and 11 Bunkyu Eiho.
The interior pages (60 lbs quality) have a smooth finish and is acid-free to ensure this book will have an exceptionally long shelf life. If this work existed 40 years ago, when I first started collecting cash coins, I would have bought it in a snap! The last photo shows a conversion chart from my 1984 catalog
Attribution Guide to Shin Kanei Tsuho
listing 254 varieties to this present catalog. Very useful if you bought that catalog from me many years ago!
