This Nurock custard cup was produced in early 1900's by Brush-McCoy Pottery Co., Ohio. Brush-McCoy created a whole line of Grape Ware kitchen pieces. I’ve included a color scan of a 1913 Brush-McCoy product catalog color plate from page 26 in the publication Sanford, Steve & Martha. 1992. The Guide to Brush-McCoy Pottery. Published by the Authors. 144 pp. illustrating the Grape Ware line. Grape Ware pieces were decorated in diffused Blue and White, Natural Colors, and Nurock (rather like a mahogany sponge).
I am unable to discern any post production issues with this custard. Nothing, absolutely nothing, that can be construed as post production issues, no alterations, chips, flakes, lines, cracks, bruises, slobbers, goobers, boogers, bumps, slimes, or repairs; it’s every bit as functional and lovely as a piece of 100+ year old stoneware can be, just as sweet as the day it was made and it displays very well.
An assortment of period stoneware custards is illustrated on page 158 in the 1996 (2001) Collector's Encyclopedia of Salt Glaze Stoneware. Collector Books. Paducah, KY. 246 pp. Terry Taylor and Terry & Kay Lowrance. The gathering of custards on this page, including a Grape Ware (Grapes on Trellis) custard are characterized as “Rare in any pattern” with a value of 5 - 0. Please refer to the attached photos of this auction, and description in the Salt Glaze Stoneware book.
This custard was intended to be used in the home, probably the oven then supper table, on a more or less a daily basis. For being 100+ years old it has withstood the test of time very well, it’s really sturdy, very well made, and really lovely. It would contribute considerably to a country kitchen and would be a stellar addition to any collection of quality Brush-McCoy.
