Description
This is a very large counter balance pendulum postal or letter scale, measuring 14” tall to the brass tray (lemon shows relative size). It may have been used for weighing packages in addition to letters. The scale is made of cast iron and has two rotating feet. The adjusting nut on the right foot is probably a replacement. All other parts are brass which I’ve kept in its tarnished condition and there’s some rust throughout. But the enamel indicator dial is in wonderful condition has a double dial which weighs from 0 to 250 grams on the top and from 0 to 5 kilograms on the bottom, depending on the position of the depending on the position of the flip over counter weight. There is also a small, fixed counterweight.
There is a monograph mark on the back which could be a stylized version of JM, making it likely to be a Jakob Maul scale. I got this scale in the UK, but they didn’t know its origin.
It measures 14” to the top of the rectangular brass tray, which is 7” wide x 5” deep. The feet are approximately 10” wide and 6” deep. But the total width of the piece is closer to 14” wide (with dial and tray) This is a very solid and substantial scale and a truly rare and sculptural piece!

I’ve been collecting antique and vintage postal and egg scales for the past 20 years and am now parting with some of my collection. (See last photo of half of my collection) I believe they’re mostly of German, Dutch or French origin – most are unmarked but I believe several are by Ph. J. Maul of Hamburg, Germany or Jakob Maul of Zell, Germany (JMAZ). They’re all made of cast iron and brass with enamel or porcelain indicators. I believe most are from the 1920s, 1930s or 1940s. I’ll provide as much info as I know in each individual listing.
